Perception

So last night, I sat around philosophising with Wade and Karlito.  The question was made, since the earth is hurtling through space at a tremendous speed, How come we can’t feel it?

Now, I don’t know who realizes the exact specifics of the earth’s travel through the void, but it is substantial.  The Sun is hurtling on an orbit around the outer edge of the Milky Way Galaxy. We are thousands of light years from the center of the Milky Way, probably further.  So the earth is traveling with the Sun around the Milky way. Thousands of miles an hour. But that is just the speed of the Sun around the Galaxy. The earth is moving around the Sun as well.

We are around an average distance of 93 million miles from the Sun. Using that as a radius, the Earth travels a distance of 27,158 Billion miles in a year in our orbit. That gives us a speed of nearly 31 million miles an hour!

Pretty fast huh.

Well, I remember in College, we had to work a problem in Physics which i thought was cool. We had to calculate the centripidal force on people generated by the earths rotation. Now, the earth is roughly 25000 miles around at the equater, and since there are 24 hours in a day, that means as you sit there reading this. the earth is spinning YOU at roughly a thousand miles an hour.

So how come we can’r feel all this?

Karlito surmised that he does feel it. Sobriety limits us all. Every time he ties one on, and lays on the bed. It’s the damn Earth that makes the room spin.
