Breaking

Filed under: Martial Arts — mlah @ 8:41 pm

so we had a little ‘breaking’ thing going on at my tkd school today.

karma hit me bad.

a while back at my old school in maryland two of my friends were testing for their second dan black belts.

chien, our instructor, had me run to home depot ealry in the morning and pick up a few cinder blocks for breaking. not the kind with holes in them. he had enough of those, he needed the cinder blocks that were like one side of the above. just a flat piece of cinder around 18″ by 8″, i’m totally guessing the dimensions.

i ran into home depot and found the outdoor bricks, lumber and cinder blocks. they had a big pile of what i needed and i picked up 3 or 4 of the things and drove back up for the test.

they had to break these things. and as it was their (jeanna and chris), they each had to break two.

you use a chopsticks on the ends of the cinder blocks.

ok, let me describe it a little better.

you place the cinder blocks with holes in them that are not to be broken on their ends and use them as supports for the cinder ‘slab’ thingies you are going to break. you place them far enough apart so that the cinder slab just barely doesn’t fall in between.

enjoy.

except that to break two at the same time, you then place a chopstick, on each end of the first cinder slab, so there is around and eigth of an inch between the two slabs you are going to break.

and repeat if you’re bad enough to do 3,4,5 or more.

they were breaking two each.

but never broke them.

they came closer to breaking their wrists.

it would seem the cinder slabs someone picked up at home depot were reinforced with rebar.

TOTALLY unintentional.

today, i had to break two. they were wet and stronger.

guess whose wrist is swollen and palm is bloody as he types?

karma has a way of coming back……..

  1. Hahahahhaha. Actually, it was just Chris who had that problem since he went first. I felt sorry for him. I didn’t feel the hurt, thank God.

  2. Yeah, me and Jeanna were the lucky ones there. Poor Chris though… I can still hear the sound of concrete *not* breaking. Shudder.
