Breaking Treaties

Filed under: Politics — mlah @ 2:10 pm

ok. i met this girl at work who shall remain nameless. she’s a flaming liberal and we had some ‘discussions’ about things.

she has a masters in international relations or some such thing and felt she had a better handle on things than me

and we all know i am NEVER wrong.

she actually believes that it is acceptable for countries to just break a treaty with the u.s.. the specific point we were talking about was the u.s. right to overfly the no fly zones in southern/northern iraq pre invasion.

first she tried to tell me that we had no right to be there anyway. after informing her about the fact that iraq had ceded us that right at the end of the first gulf war, she insisted that time had passed, and there were ‘nuances’.

i expressed to her that since the rights were ceded as part of a peace treaty, and the rights were no longer being observed. that the peace treaty was null, and hostilities should have been resumed at that time.

she then tried to tell me that we would never allow it. i informed her about ikes ‘open skies’ initiative which ended that vein of discussion.

but the crux of our disagreement was that

1. other coutries should always have their best interests at heart.
2. we are no different or better than other countries.
3. the u.s. should be considering other countries best interests in negotiations.
4. we have to present any disagreements to the u.n. for resolution
5. we have to abide 100% by any decision the u.n. makes.
6. other nations do NOT have to go to the u.n. for disagreements with the u.s. they are free to break those treaties at will because we have a seat on the security council, and therefore control the u.n. via our beto.

my point to her, was #2 is correct, and therefore we should also be obeying rule #1. especially since no one else is looking out for our interests.

that the u.n. is useless and should be disbanded.

treaties broken do not have to be obeyed by us either.

later in the day, she lamented the rains deluging her home states of jersey, and new yohk. and wondered aloud why the rains had to happen.

i told her because all yankees were Godless pinkos.
