Rum Cake

Filed under: Sea Stories — mlah @ 1:50 pm

redsugar cited rum cake as her favorite cake a few days back. if memory serves.

reminded me of my favorite rum cake incident.

when i was in spain riding boats, that’s submarines for you non bubbleheads, we use to ‘catch’ boats in la maddalena, italy. that means we used to fly up there and wait for the sub to pull in to port. then we would report aboard and go with them when they got underweigh again.

one time we got to wait 5 days for the sub to arrive. it was painful, having the usn pay for our hotel, AND give us money (per diem) while we wiated for the sub. the boat was legitimately delayed, so we enjoyed the italian island os sardinia in the meantime.

waiting for a boat was a time honored tradition for us bubbleheads in rota. we normally had a hotel in a little town named palau across from the island of ‘la madd’. and we had our favorite hangouts there.

san giorgio’s stands out in my memory, sitting around, drinking those huge pitcher sized glasses of beer.

i watched the ’94 world cup in palau. i had to flee a bar after cheering for ireland against italy (eire won 1-0). i thought i was going to get dumped in the med!

we had our own little ristorante we called felix’s at the end of the pier. we stumbled across a ny italian working there. he spoke no italian, and nobody there spokeany english, except for his fiance’ (she happened to be the proprietors daughter). a couple of team members were pissed that they didn’t have lasagna. they just couldn’t understand that not every restaurant in italy wouldn’t have pasta, lasgna, and pizza. felix’s was more of a seafood type place. it was here that his fiance used peer pressure to make me eat a mussel. soaked in garlic and butter sauce.

i still love mussels.!

felix alwasy hooked us up, and we always hooked him and his fiance’ up.

but one night we got a wild hair. and we walked up the hill into palau proper and ate dinner at a fancy hotel restaurant. we oredered more than we should have. and were correspondingly stuffed. i was ready to call for the wheel barrow to have someone roll my gorged fat ass out to the street, when, lo and behold here came the dessert tray.

there was no way. it all looked good, and we had more than enough money in our per diem to cover it, but we were just so stuffed!

the waiter went down the length of the tray and told us about each item. we all smiled, because we knew we just couldn’t.

and the last thing was rum cake.

i love rum cake. my grandmother made some really good rum cake. i’ve liked it ever since.

this wasn’t the same thing. but i didn’t know that yet.

so i ordered some rum cake. it was a huge piece. and my friends just laughed at me.

then i tried it and smiled. and started eating.

then the questions started. they knew i was stuffed. just like they were.

and i had to explain.

apparently. in palau, if not all of italy, they bake a white cake, and then POUR a bottle of rum over it, and frost it.

so for 4 bucks, i had 3 shots worth of rum, and some pretty damn good cake!

we ate rumcake there every day.

  8. They all volunteered to be in the United States military GUS, get over it!!!

  9. Gus, you posted the names of over a thousand people who had the courage of their convictions. Unlike yourself. You weep for the fallen but would never put on the uniform; you’ve made it clear that you have nothing but contempt for our military. You make a huge issue about these war dead, but would never even consider making such a sacrifice for your country.

    You hypocrytical, craven coward.

Why not post the names of the 3,000 killed that morning in September? At least then, you would remember why it is we are fighting.

But then, your response to that attack is appeasement of the enemy.

  10. jabba the hut. i mean michael moor.

come on gus. the army wants YOU! go make a difference!

an army of one. gussie boy! being all that he can be, and before 9 am!

all those names you posted gus. they’re REAL heroes. not armchair critics, sitting in their la-z-boy drinking cherry squishies.

go on, come on out here. you think you know how to do it right, lead the way!

  11. No kidding, Blondie, they did volunteer. But it seems like most of them have died from being in vehicles that aren’t armored for IED’s. We didn’t equip them– not because of any of Kerry’s votes in the Senate, but because of poor planning on Bush/Rove/Rumsfeld’s part (what kind of war, how many forces, how soon to rush to war in time for the election, etc). Their blood is all over W’s hands. Sorry, I can’t get over that. I’d even feel bad if an (out of hand slur deleted by mlah was here) like you got blown away.
Yup, we’ve been thru this already. I have nothing against those in the service. I only wish they had better job opportunites in the private sector. The buck stops with their Commander in Chief. I told you how I almost signed up with the Navy in early 2002. If I trusted Bush, I’d be translating Farsi intercepts in some tincan right now. And for the last time, Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11, shit-for-brains! My response to that attack was not appeasement but to string up fucking bin Laden and co.– which didn’t include the estimated 100,000 (one hundred thousand!) Iraqi civilians we have killed.

  12. gussie boy. where to start.

first, please keep the slurs to a modicum inuendo and sarcasm are fun, but actual sexist remarks (or other -ist remarks) are unwelcome.

second. i don’t care if alqaeda had/has no ties to saddam/iraq. iraq definitely has ties to terrorism. they commited numerous acts of war against and were duly smacked.

100k huh? cite the source please, and make sure it’s credible. i heard we’ve only killed 10 people.! see, i can make bogus claims too.

minorities need better job opportunities in the civilian sector? they have the same opportunities i do. the sky’s the limit baby. they could have done anything. this vein of argument is a red herring. we are supposed to provide people with better oppotunities? NO NO NO! a person makes his own opportunities gus. MAJOR point of difference between a liberal and a conservative.

y’all sit on your asses and wait for the govt to provide.

    we make our own way.

their blood is on bush’s hands? because he and rove/cheney/condi…. didn’t provide them with armored vehicles? they’re the best combat vehicles in the world. it is unrealistic for anyone to expect better vehicles. vehicles by the way, that kerry had some say in their design, as a voting senator during their congressional review and purchase.

bush was managing a baseball team.

you really think he’s responsible for design deficiencies (your apparent opinion, not mine) that were approved by congress (your boy kerry included) when he wasn’t even in politics?

rush to war? yeah, that 12 year rush to war.

how can even you believe the crap you spray?

  13. http://www.economist.com/science/displayStory.cfm?story_id=3352814
for analysis of the study published in the British medical journal, The Lancet, about the 100,000 figure.
Iraq’s ties to terrorism were what? After-the-fact grants to the families of Palestinian martyrs. How about any direct or operational support of anti-American terrorism? Not! Did they ever hand off any WMD, that we know of? Not!
I wasn’t talking about minorities in this thread. Lower-middle class people in general, yes, deserve more opportunites for employment than the military. Not everyone can afford (or knows how) to start a business. And in the absurd situation of everyone becoming an entrepreneur, there would be no one left to become an employee. You’re talking crazy, dude. Just as many liberals as conservatives are dependent upon being employed by someone else. You “make your own way”, huh? Oh, so you’re your a freelancer, are you? BS.
If we didn’t send our kids in with sufficiently armored vehicles, because we thought it would a cakewalk, that’s one mistake. The worse mistake, however, if continuing to let them get IED’ed when we know that is a major tactic against us. Both are all the President’s and Pentagon’s fault. They insisted on starting the invasion with absolute haste, under ZERO threat. Why didn’t they just wait until we had more armor for bodies and vehicles? Blood, blood, drip, drip.

  14. All that blood on the presidents’ hands. The thousands of dead when Wilson refused to abandon static trench warfare in France. The thousands of dead when Roosevelt refused to send “the aid” to the Philippines. The thousands of dead when Roosevelt refused to abandon the bombing campaign over Europe even though the bombers had no fighter support. The hundreds of dead when Roosevelt insisted on sending half-trained and ill equipped Marines onto Guadalcanal and allowed the Navy to run away without offloading their reinforcements and supplies. The hundreds of dead when Truman allowed his military forces to be gutted to the point where they could not resist the North Korean invasion and were forced back to a tenuous hold on the Pusan perimiter. The hundreds of dead because Kennedy insisted on sustaining the fight for a losing colonial cause in Indochina/Vietnam. The thousands of dead when Johnson refused to pull his troops out of Vietnam. All that blood on the Presidents’ hands.

How can the Democrats even look America in the eye when they have killed so many thousands of our soldiers through their inept leadership of this country??

Get the picture there, Gus? Or do I have to spell it out for you better?

    Comment by yup — November 6, 2004 @ 9:49 am

  15. It seems no matter what we say, Yup and Mlah, Gus doesn’t get it. He’s gotten to the point where he’s using sexist slurs.

    That’s low Gus.

As much time as Gus seems to have to post to this site, he seems like an introvert, and probably has no life outside of politics…it’s sad really.

We can try to convince him that what we’re doing is right, but I think he’s too busy trying to convince us that we’re wrong.

Well Gus, it’s much easier for you to sit on your buttox and talk about how you’d fix things or better yet, how you’d like someone else to fix things than it is to actually contribute to society. Yeah, if you WISH for peace long enough, eventually it just happens, right? Sure…keep on thinking that.

It’s okay. I can sleep at night. And I believe in what I’m fighting for. My family and friends support me, and there are millions of other Americans who support our efforts in Iraq. I don’t need your support to make me feel better.
We’ll keep fighting this war while you sit on your a–and post to Mlah’s website all day.
