PhatNoise in my GTI

i finally got my new phatnoise mp3 player installed. they did a good job of making this thing.

unfortunately, they won’t work in every car yet. i didn’t really pay any attention to that when i bought mine, i just knew that it would work in my little gti. sean over at ambivalent one is lamenting the fact that he can’t get one for his audi yet, and has even written the company to try and help them along.

phatnoise is an interface for a 20 Gb hard drive. you drag and drop mp3s onto the hard drive from a docking station on your computer, carry the hard drive out to your car, and play your music. i have almost 1,000 songs on my phatnoise right now, and not even a third of the portable hard drive is full.

i bought this thing back in february and have been slacking about getting it installed.

The portable hard drive removed

first, i put off installing it because it was winter, and let’s face it. as a texan, i abhor the cold, especially snow. 1 week is nice, especially if it gets me a day off of work, but after that, i want sunshine and girls in bikinis, not fur coats.

second, i had to get the mounting bracket. vw gtis comes pre-wired for a 6 disc cd changer in the back. phatnoise uses this as in interface (just plug it in like it was a cd changer). but the space for the cd changer is a bit too small to accomodate the phatnoise. i wish they could have made it the same size as a standard 6 disc changer.

third, because once i broke down and bought the mounting bracket (not included, bad form phatnoise) they stipulated i realized i would have to remove my amplifier and the bracket it was in to install this one.

no way.

i ran the wire through my spare tire compartment and mounted it on the opposite side of the trunk from where they wanted.

works like a charm.

The docking station on my desk

pay no attention to the random gear on my desk. normally my desk is spotless. πŸ˜‰

the phatnoise utilizes playlists to deliver your music.

first, docked in my computer, after copying a premade winamp playlist onto the portable hd, their software did an outstanding job of going and getting every single song and copying it to the hd. it was surprisingly painless for me. just copy the playlist, their supllied software goes and gets the music for you.

second, from the car. you hit button ‘2’ on my monsoon stereo to access playlists. then the regular up and down arrows let you toggle playlists, and no shit, when you toggle a playlist, the phatnoise SPEAKS the title. that is the f’n puta madre right there. after getting to the playlist you desire, you wait 5 seconds for the phatnoise to revert back to track list, instead of playlist mode. then just use regualr cd controls to move through music. with 1,000 songs in alphabetical order, i’m using a random jump. phatnoise has the ability as well to let you play genre, artist, album, and lots more special features.

near 1,000 tunes. and my monsoon cranks them out.

a couple of links,

madpony is quitting. they have a picture up of teddy lehman and jason white right now.

  1. Hey, way to go on getting that installed. I cannot believe how much music you’ve got on your computer. I think everything on my hard drive (everything: OS, games, music, apps) takes up just 20 gigs on my 80 gig drive. Well, 74.5, because the damn hard drive manufacturers lie and say that 1,000 MB = 1 GB, when really it’s 1024 MB that = 1 GB. Multiply that 24 meg difference 80 times, and you get a helluva lot of space that simply isn’t there. Yeah, this is pretty off-topic, now that I think of it…

  4. Now I know what to get my husband for Christmas! I don’t think his Durango has an mp3 player and since he commutes every sunday to NYC he’d love to have this new toy. Unfortunately for him, he’ll have to wait.

Although, I was just informed during this comment that he could play mp3s if we upgrade our vehicle to DVD. Of course, it’ll be his SUV that gets it and not mine!! πŸ™

  5. Yes I agree…..Jealousy is an ugly word.

    I want my MP3!!!!!..

That Phatnoise is so cool! I think it is probably better to have it in your car than hanging in your ear outside of the car.

I think I’ll just save my pennies for the car Mp3. I’ll let you know when that is.(at this rate probably in 10 years.)

  6. Hey, maybe that’s what I need for the truck. Talk radio in Chicago just gets uglier-Even Hannity gets me pissed by the stories he reports. Wow, 20 gig. Dang.

  7. Psssst… I don’t own an Audi… I have a modded Z24. I contemplated just not saying anything but I love my beautiful Chevy and it felt like I was betraying her. Anyways, my car audio is Alpine (sub, amp and deck… soon to be Alpine mains as well). No compatability… the guy who wrote back to me tried to foist an RF adapter to me… I was like pffft… fuck that shit… Am I allowed to swear here? Is this site family oriented? πŸ™‚

Also, here’s a direct link to my plea to Phatnoise:
    And their reply to me:
