Run for your Life!

Melissa and her teammates

anybody else getting fatter with old age?

my doc kicked me in the butt a couple of years back. threatened me with Heart Disease and Diabetes. told me that almost without a doubt i would get 1, if not both of the afore mentioned ailments. unless of course i dropped 15-25 pounds.

that’s when i took up taekwondo. mainly as an exercise regimen. ok, i’m actually a cheap bastard, and i knew that if i pay for the classes, i’ll make sure i get my fat butt in there and do the work. and i’ve lost near 40 pounds, and put on some muscle. 😉

not like my apartment complex’s workout room. i saw that place 1 time. when they were showing me around the complex for the first time.

Mel and buddy

the girl pictured running is an old navy friend of mine. well, she’s not old. i am a little. this girl was never fat but has apparently taken up 5k runs just for the sport of it. it’s doing her well too.

the pictured run was this last weekend in montgomery, alabama. melissa says she didn’t win, but had a good time. her posted time was 26 minutes even.

do the math. 5k is 3.125 miles, and for 26 minutes, that’s an 8:32 minute mile. and she did it for 3.125 miles.

i’ve been dreading my upcoming black belt test (1 to 2 years away). we have a requirement for an 8 minute mile.

just one mile. true, we have a lot of other physical requirements during the test (like speed kicks, the bane of my existence)

when i told rachael (the ex-marine) i had to do an 8 minute mile, her first reaction was to ask ‘for how many miles, 5 or 6?’. and yes i’ll pay for telling the world she was a marine, but after the ebony incident, i don’t care.

i’m beginning to think i am spoiled now.

Melissa was part of a team. they each ran a 5k.

i think i’m going to have to start running a little distance.

i’m just real happy to see that not everybody has to wait ’til their doctor kicks them off of the couch to get active.

anybody else doing anything fun for a little pt? a little original activity?

anyone up for a 5k?

and a little sidenote, in keeping with my last post, i called melissa an old navy friend. she used to be. ’til she turned to the dark side. she’s a zoomie now. that’s air force for you non-military types.

unrelated, the Yale Diva titled her most recent post the same thing. except she is fleeing from dummocrats. i think she gets her exercise running from trendy boutique to school and back.

  3. I remember taking Gung Fu back in college and a little afterward. I was going for my orange belt and I was able to take my Shifu down. he was not happy and kicked my a** after that. Got my belt anyway.

  4. I’m definitely no stranger to TKD. I studied it for alot of years. I think that your mind will benefit as much as your body. Glad to hear about the positive results though. I just recently took up kendo for the same reason. I love it and I’m definitely getting healthier cause of it…
