Essex Tourny Results

well, i’m back

as a school, we did well, and we did not so well.

forms. i think the karate kid movies calls them ‘kata’. i got second place.

out of two. 🙁

and i still got a trophy. just not too many 33-39 year old, male, blue belts in maryland who want to compete. and it wasn’t close. i got beaten rather soundly. i don’t know why. i nailed my form. no wobbles, no mess ups. i got beaten.

at first i just chalked it up to the judges not liking me. then i noticed a trend. lots of the people from our school were losing.

rachel, kristen, daichan (spelling?), olivia, everyone was getting second of two. cory got third of four. except little john, he got a gold. i don’t know how the others did off the top of my head. i’ll post full tallies later (along with pics)

you can see taeguk 5, the form i did on the korean wtf page here.

wtf? i wish i knew what we/i did wrong.

sparring. we did well.

i won.

twice

first match, i fought victor. purple belt. looked like he was a heavy weight too, but he claimed to weigh a mere 190 #.

he liked to punch. and he had some good punches, but we actually wear a little body armor to keep the physical injuries down. and you actually have to deliver momentum to your opponent with a strike to score a point. and i weigh around 225#.

final score: 8-1.

i hurt my right ankle a little. it hurts like a bad boy right now.

i had a one match break before my second opponent.

this was james of the tae-kuk school. never heard of them before. except that rick, a red belt who works out at my school, attended their school for 6 months.

he didn’t like the school. seems they advance their students very fast. so when rick was there as a blue belt (he is red now) he was actually teaching their black belts.

he saw james start as a white belt something like a year ago. and he is a blue belt now. i’ve been taking tkd for around 2 1/2 years.

james weighs around 180 #. i had a couple of inches height on him too. but he looked good. kicked high when he was warming up.

james had a girlfriend in attendance. a mouthy girlfriend. don’t know anything about her, except that she thinks tkd is baseball, and that she likes to heckle.

james lost tonight. james lost big. i wish i could say it was because of the “little lady’s” comments, but i really didn’t hear when she called me fat.

first round ended something like 6-1. me.

i put the guy on the floor with a reverse side kick in the second. i HOPE that is on tape. after one of our most recent outtings, chien (our master instructor) felt our side kicks were week, and worked us mercilessly. nice to know hard work pays off.

oh, james almost went to the floor for something else as well. he went to hands and feet, but nothing else touched the floor. my first instinct was to stop. he was down. but then i realized that the ref (master sharma), had not stopped the fight, and that he was not really down. in fact, he was getting his balance, and about to pop back up. so i kicked him. the ‘girlfriend’ expressed her displeasure with my unsportsman like conduct. the ref never said a word, just ref’d the fight as it happened. james had never really been ‘down’ he was only on hands and feet.

when it was 8-2, girlfriend yelled (and i was informed this by a spectator) “come on, get him, fat boy is tired.”

final score.

13-2, me. seems somebody else was tired too. and i’m not fat, i’m big boned. 😉

i’ll let y’all see some pics and you can judge for yourself if i am fat ot not. i wish i had heard it.

dot; who is not my wife, heard it, and was just hoping i wouldn’t hang back at that point. she didn’t like the girlfriend at all, and was very happy i continued to score.

i got a trophy for the sparring.

both victor and james were decent guys. i talked to them both a little.

mike v. (who is 21) was my coach.

we did well sparring.

kristen and rachel both won. i believe kristen fought ‘up’, ie somebody in a higher weight/belt/age class but i am not positive.

chris hinds and dave bailey both won, then had to fight each other for first.

nicholas was sporting his new yellow belt on the first place platform.

little olivia won 8-0. man is she getting good.

daichan lost 3-2.

little john got double gold.

corey got second.

good day. i saw a black belt (females, around 15) get kicked in the head with a jumping back spin kick. hardest kick for me to do, and to actually make contact, and to the head. wish i had that on tape.

  1. Well done, on the sparring. Now you have something to crow about. When you review the tape of your forms, with an OBJECTIVE EYE, you might be able to discern why you got 2nd. Maybe not. I have known some judges in all sports, to occasionally be biased and let it show in their judging. 215 Lbs??? Wow. Savagemod99

  2. way to go, Big Guy!

I see you all the time.

    You are not fat

Some punk and his li’l woman were just weak sore losers!

I agree with the comment above-watch the tape in a couple of days-you’ll figure it out.

  3. unfortunately, the other guy cannot be seen in the same screen. ie, only i am visible on the tape. sad fact of where the taper had to stand. but like i said, it seemed to be a little too pervasive of a problem, hopefully i’ll be able to watch some of the kids forms and see what happened. i’m also sure chien, mike and gene will be better at it than i.

  4. Don’t worry about the forms, dude. It’s been like that since the beginning of time. It’s simply because no one does the traditional forms like we do anymore. Everyone else fancies ’em up and changes them. We stay traditional, but we are the only ones. Did you know that I never got a first in forms until I was a green belt and Mr. Chien was one of the judges? Well, that’s how it is. But we always get em back in sparring. Good work mlah.

  5. I’d rather have a guy beside me who can kick ass than one who looks good anyway. Congrats. I wish I was in that good shape.

  6. Back when I was doing TKD my school went to a few tournaments where other styles attended as well. I have to admit, the tae guk forms are kinda boring compared to just about everything else. Supposedly there was another set of forms used before tae guk that was supposed to be cool.

Unfortunately as things are the forms are pretty dry until Pal which is slightly interesting and Koryo which you’ll remember the rest of your life even if you stop practicing.

Also, as a big guy myself I’m here to tell you that your not gonna be graceful like the girls. Our job is to kick ass in the sparring side of the tournement so thats where I would put my energy if I were you.
